Most ancient Greek art can be found in museums around the world. The majority of it represents people, scenes from myths, gods, and animals.
STATUES and Sculptures
Statues were sometimes used as a gift for the gods, had religious value and were sometimes painted bright and colorfully. In most cases they were of men, women or gods; also deceased people and they were used to mark their grave. Small statues and sculptures were usually made of clay or of bronze. While marble and bronze was used for larger statues or sculptures. Inside temples the statues were huge and had great value. In Olympia there is a statue of Zeus, as shown to left, it is known as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Vases
Most vases were made out of clay and metal and are most remembered by their beautiful decoration and designs. Vases could be several different colors like red, orange, black and sometimes even white or purple.
Black Figure
The vase covered in a special mixture, which in this case was the design, turned black when it was fired. Everything not covered in this special clay mixture turned orange and red.
Red Figure
The vase would be totally covered in the special clay mixture, so it would turn black. Except for the design which would not have the special clay mixture on it. This would turn orange and red.
Other Art
There were many different types of art not just sculptures and statues and vases. Other types of art included architecture, painted pictures, even jewelry and mosaics.
